The “Cody Road” followed the Shoshone River through Shoshone Canyon. The old road (left), below Buffalo Bill Dam, is open to hikers and fishermen. Originally called Shoshone Dam, it was the highest dam in the world, 325 feet, when completed in 1910.

Pahaska Tepee was built as a hunting lodge for William Cody in 1904. It was “end of the road” for automobiles until August 1, 1915, the day they were allowed in Yellowstone.
The Irma Hotel, still in operation, opened in 1902. It was built by William Cody and named for one of his daughters.
